Gabriel's Guitar FAQ
Q: My guitar buzzes in different places all over the fretboard. What's going on?

There could also be problems with your bridge, saddle(s), nut, string trees, neck, fretboard, truss rod, or many other possibilities. But chances are that if the guitar is not brand new, the problem is your frets. The more and more you play, the vibrations of the strings wear down the frets and flatten the tops, eventually digging small grooves into the fret just below the string. This is a problem that can usually be resolved with a Level, Crown, and Polish (LCP), which is a process in which we first flatten the frets so that they are all the same height, then we re-crown them to a singular crowning point, and finally polish them for aesthetic appeal. See LCP in the repair section. Unfortunately, sometimes frets get worn just a little too far, and an LCP is no longer possible. At this point, your only option is a refret. In this procedure, we remove all your old frets, and replace them with new and perform a setup on the guitar. These are issues that only a certified luthier or repairman can decipher. We recommend that you bring the guitar in and we will be able to tell you what you need very quickly. Category |
